About

Hello, we're Susan and Clark

We're Susan and Clark Johnson, and Provenance Arts is our family business. It was born from the things we love most: time in nature, the craft of woodworking, and old traditions worth keeping alive.

We work together from our studio in Edgewater, Maryland, on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Every piece we sell is made one by one, by the two of us, for the person who ordered it. Nothing sits on a warehouse shelf. When you place an order, we start making your piece.

One of the oldest art forms in the world

Relief carving and relief ceramics date back thousands of years to the earliest civilizations, from the carved walls of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia to temples and homes across the ancient world. They are among the oldest surviving forms of artistic expression in human history.

We love being part of that long tradition. Our pieces are built in layers of relief, so lighthouses, waterfalls, mountain peaks and quiet marshes rise from the surface and catch the light the way real places do.

Where it comes from matters

Provenance means the origin of something: the place and the story it comes from. Our designs come from the places people carry with them: a lighthouse on a family vacation, the mountains of a honeymoon, a harbor that feels like home. From the Chesapeake to New England to the national parks of the West, every collection celebrates a place worth remembering.

Made by us, made for you

  • Made one by one, by us, for the person ordering it.
  • Carved in real wood and finished by hand. No two pieces of wood are alike, so grain, tone and color vary and make every piece one of a kind.
  • Made to order and shipped in 2-3 weeks, fully insured and always free.
  • Original designs, created in our studio. Each Provenance Arts™ piece is protected by copyright.

Your place, carved in wood

We also create custom pieces from your own photos: your home, your boat, or the place you said "I do." See custom commissions.

We'd love to hear from you. Write to us anytime at studio@provenancearts.com.

With gratitude,
Susan & Clark Johnson
